AFED Annual Conference 2019

Dates and venue of AFED 12th Annual Conference have been announced. The event will take place on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 November at Le Bristol hotel, Beirut - Lebanon. AFED report on "Environmental Education" will be presented and debated at the event. A draft syllabus of a course entitled “Introduction to Environment and Sustainability” has been sent to AFED member universities for comments. AFED Report on Environmental Education in Arab Countries

First drafts of the AFED 12th annual report on Environmental Education in Arab Countries have been submitted by authors and work on revision and editing has kicked off. The report will provide the first comprehensive overview of the position of environment in school and university curricula, and develop recommendations to upgrade the system. Research teams working on the report come from various leading universities, including American University of Beirut, Cairo University, Ain Shams University (Egypt), University of Bahrain, Arab Gulf University, PETRA University (Jordan) and King Abdulaziz University (Saudi Arabia).

 

AFED Report and Conference Discussed with Kuwait Foundation, 23 April 2019

A meeting hosted by Dr. Adnan Shihabeldin, Director General Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS), and attended by AFED Secretary General and members of KFAS management, discussed venues of cooperation in the AFED report and conference on Environmental Education. KFAS has been an AFED long-time partner.

 

ROPME Celebrates Regional Environment Day in Kuwait, 24 April 2019

The Regional Organization for the Protection of Marine Environment (ROPME) celebrated Regional Environment Day at its new headquarters in Kuwait. This year’s theme was on the Risks of Climate Change on the Marine Environment. AFED secretary general Najib Saab joined Dr. Abdelrahman Al-Awadi, Executive Secretary of ROPME and Chairman of AFED Executive Committee, in the opening of an art exhibition on the occasion, with paintings on marine life and climate change by students from various Gulf countries.

 

eMISK:  Environmental Monitoring Information System of Kuwait, 24 April, 2019

Dr. Mohammed Al-Ahmad, Deputy Director General of the Environment Public Authority in Kuwait, presented the innovative live portal on Kuwait environment, beatona.net, which is developed and managed by the Environmental Monitoring Information System of Kuwait (eMISK) and Environment Public Authority (EPA). At a meeting at EPA office, cooperation with AFED was discussed on how to explore the educational potential of the portal, as source of information on the state of Kuwait environment. It has been agreed that EPA will contribute material on education in Kuwait for AFED report.

 

Green Growth Pathways for Saudi Arabia, 30 April 2019

Green Growth Pathways for Saudi Arabia was the topic of a workshop, hosted at the iconic headquarters of KAPSARC campus in Riyadh. AFED was strongly present at the event, and its report were distributed to participants. Secretary General Najib Saab moderated the opening session where he explained AFED vision of diversified green economy, based on an inclusive model of development. AFED’s Honorary Trustee Suleiman Herbish stressed the need to fight energy poverty, by utilizing nature’s proceeds without depleting its assets and harming the environment. AFED’s Coordinator of Energy Program Dr. Ibrahim Abdelgelil called for prioritizing energy efficiency.
